Saratoga Lake and Lake George Ulysses S. Grant
One of the historic highlights of this area is a hidden gem known as Grant Cottage. In 1885 the
famous Civil War General and two-term U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant spent his final days in a
mountaintop cottage only a short distance from the lakes, you can see the mountain in the
distance. Like much of high society at that time, the Grant family
vacationed in Saratoga and Lake George. President Grant visited the lakes more than once and came for the
Great Intercollegiate Regatta here in Saratoga in 1874. When Grant was diagnosed with throat cancer, his
doctors chose 1000ft Mount McGregor because there was a health resort built there for the
“curative” air.
The tour guides up there share the compelling story of how Grant spent his last days finishing
his memoirs to take care of his family financially. The cottage is an amazing time-capsule
experience with the original furnishings left in place just the way they were the day Grant died.
In addition to the cottage tours, there are audio and guided tours of the grounds and a
scavenger hunt for the kids. One of the best features of the site is an incredible view of the
Hudson Valley from the Eastern Overlook, you can see 3 states and five mountain ranges! You
can also see Saratoga Lake, you can try to wave but we probably won’t be able to see you. A
visitor center provides exhibits, a film, and a nice gift shop. It’s a great place for a picnic lunch
too.
The Historic Site is located off exit 16 of Interstate – 87, open Wednesday-Sunday 9:30AM-
4PM. Pre-booking of guided tours is not required but is recommended. Tickets available at

Many Names of Lake George
Did you ever wonder how the 32-mile crown jewel of the Adirondacks got its name?
From which famous George does this beautiful body of water draw its name, and who called it Lake George?
Read on to find out!
“Andia-ta-roc-te is the oldest recorded name of Lake George. That Native American moniker means the “lake that shuts itself in.”
Fun fact: James Fenimore Cooper’s “Last of the Mohicans” the fictional Native American name for Lake George is “Horicon” (after a tribe that may have lived nearby) because Cooper felt Andia-ta-roc-te would be too difficult to pronounce.
Next time you take a tour with us on the lake, see if you can spot the Horicon ship, which is one half of Lake George Shoreline’s cruise ship fleet.
Back to history — In 1646, Isaac Jogues renamed the lake “Lac du Saint Sacrement, which means “Lake of the Blessed Sacrament” in French.
St. Jogues was born in Orleans, France. He was a missionary and martyr who worked with Iroquois, Huron and other Native Americans. He is the first recorded European to name what is today Lake George.
You may notice another cruise ship on the lake bearing this second recorded name — the Lac Du St. Sacrement is the largest of Lake George Steamboat Company’s ships.
Let’s travel to 1755 now when Sir William Johnson, for which nearby Johnstown is named, renamed the lake located in the southern Adirondacks “Lake George” in honor of King George II.
William Johnson also named Fort William Henry, which is located at the southern end of the lake. Johnson named the Fort in honor of Prince William Henry, grandson of King George II.
